SCAT SINGING BASICS
Improvising in Songs
with Sarah M. Greer & Jennifer Parker
Monday, October 29th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm
Studio 200C • 2637 27th Avenue South •
Minneapolis • 55406
Hello. We are Sarah and Jen.
We invite you to spend an evening with us beginning to scat sing and improvise. You will learn ideas that work for you and get voice-on experience trying them out.
This workshop provides a safe space to practice scat singing and improvising with experienced coaches and other supportive singers.
What will we do in this workshop?
In a word, practice. *smile*
More specifically, we will practice scatting to simple and standard songs, the blues and songs participants bring to help you unlock your spontaneous singer.
We will work individually and in ensemble to help you discover your own personal language and tools for scatting, story-telling and lyric improvisation. With a few simple ideas and exercises, you can breathe new life into your songs (even if you've been singing them for years).
Other topics we will cover include:
- Singing over changes
- Melodic embellishment
- Rhythmic phrasing
- Trying out vocal textures
In addition, Jen and Sarah will coach three (3) participants during the class on a song of their choice. If you are interested in bringing a prepared song for coaching, please check the box on the registration form below. (Personal coaching is first come, first serve.) Personal coaching has sold out.
What if I've never tried scat singing (improvising) before?
Then this workshop is the place to start!
We will begin with simple, fun ideas that you get improvising. Trust us – everyone has a personal and unique improv language. You just might not know or trust yours yet. *smile*
The key to scatting easily is to access and share your personal language and perspective. You have things to sing that no one else does.
How will learning to scat improve my singing?
One word = trust.
Improvising builds trust in your self, your voice and your abilities. When you trust your voice, you can release it and you are able to sing with freedom and confidence. “Mistakes” become opportunities (rather than train wrecks).
Even when you are not improvising in a performance, knowing you can improvise helps you to feel more connected to your songs, fellow players and audiences.
Improvising keeps us present and improves harmony and rhythm skills; counting bars and singing over changes; and develops vocal colors and technique.
Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is for singers who want to try scatting and improvising in songs and other standard forms.
It is suitable for adults and teens who like to sing, who are comfortable singing in a group setting and who have good rhythm and pitch skills and familiarity with song forms. Each singer will receive personal attention and feedback.
Do I need to bring anything?
You might want to bring a notebook, pen or pencil and water bottle with you. You are also welcome to bring a recorder. If you are signing up for personal coaching, please bring sheet music (or a lead sheet) for your song.
