Jazz Fundamentals I: Starting to Scat Sing

ONLINE WORKSHOP

Saturday, April 11th 1:30 to 3:00 pm

Hi, I’m Sarah,

I invite you to spend an afternoon learning to scat sing and improvise.

The Jazz Fundamentals I workshop provides time and space to practice scat singing. Singers learn techniques that really work while getting “voice-on” experience trying them out.

This updated workshop includes more singing time and more work on fundamentals – syllable choice, personal language and choosing notes (hint: it’s not about how many scales you know). Singers also work with groove and feel and learn the basics of vocal percussion.

Practicing fundamentals

In this Zoom workshop, I will teach and demonstrate some of the elements of scat singing and then we will take turns practicing the techniques. We’ll use our time to help you discover your own personal language and tools for scat singing.

With a few simple ideas and exercises, you can scat sing successfully and breathe new life into songs (even the ones you may have been singing for years). We will cover:

  • Melodic development and embellishment
  • Front and back phrasing
  • Syllable and language choice
  • Exploring vocal textures

The key to scat singing effortlessly is to access and share your personal language and perspective. We begin with straightforward, step-by-step exercises that get you scat singing in ways that are easy for you.

How will scat singing improve my overall singing?

Improvising builds trust in your self, your voice and your abilities. When you trust your voice, you can trust your ensemble. You can listen deeply and sing at the same time.

Technically, scat singing lets us practice many musical skills at once. We develop harmonic and rhythmic skills; learn to count bars and sing over changes; and expand vocal colors and technique.

“I would absolutely take this class again and again. So much to learn and practice. You made the environment so safe and fun and adventurous.” — Lynette

Who can attend?

This workshop is open to singers of all levels, from beginners to professionals, who want to learn how to scat sing. Previous experience scat singing is NOT necessary.

Jazz Fundamentals I is suitable for adults and teens who like to sing, who are comfortable singing in a group setting and who have basic rhythm and pitch skills.

Each singer receives personal attention and feedback.
